Starting out as the Baltimore Orioles, the franchise was moved to New York to become the Highlanders in 1903. By 1920, the Yankees, as they had first been known in 1913 had acquired Babe Ruth from Boston and would play and lose its first World Series in 1921.
In 1923, the team moved to the new Yankee Stadium where Ruth would hit 60 homers and the 1927 team would call home. With the loss of Miller Huggins in 1929, the Yankees would not reach the postseason until 1932, when Ruth's called shot would increase the Bambino's mythological status.
Picking up the young Californian named DiMaggio, the Bronx Bombers would win four World Series in a row from 1936-39. They would win more championships in 1941 and 1943 and would not win another until 1947. With the arrival of Mantle and Ford, the Yankees would again dominate in the 1950's. The year 1961 marked the great march of Roger Maris who would break Ruth's record by hitting 61 homers. After winning the World Series in 1962 over the San Francisco Giants, the Yanks would not win another until 1977. They would not win another Series until 1996. By 2000, the team had won 26 World Championships and is known as one of the world's greatest professional teams. Whether you are a fan or that you think of them as the 'Evil Empire,' their dominance and rich history can't be denied. Boasting all-time greats like Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Berra, Mantle, Maris, Reggie Jackson, Winfield, Mattingly, Jeter, Posada, Giambi, and Alex Rodriguez, their dominance continues to this day.
